Rimz & Ribz
July 14, 2007

This is an official event photograph that was taken by the organizers as Lynn and Penny arrived for the show.

This postcard sized flyer that was given to Lynn about a month before the event.

One morning while he was getting breakfast at a local restaurant, a stranger presented Lynn with a postcard sized flyer for an upcoming car show. Rimz & Ribz was a car show and barbecue lunch to be held at a local church. Lynn had fond memories of the annual picnic that was held at his church as a youth, and recalled the great barbecue chicken that they served. Maybe this would be a fun way for Jeanne and Lynn to snag a good meal and have some fun in the balance.

A couple of shots of Penny at the show.

The show was of moderate size (maybe 60 vehicles) and featured an eclectic mix of new and old, cars and trucks, stock and modified. There was even a spruced-up garbage truck! A live band played great music and the day was clear and sunny, but not too hot.

Jeanne and Lynn did score a passable barbecue lunch.

Lynn had a lot of fun showing Penny to the visitors, demonstrating her smooth, slow idle and making some crowd pleasing noises with Penny's wolf whistle.

Later in the afternoon, Lynn and Penny win, through a drawing, a $350 bumper scuff prize donated by a local vendor. Lynn hasn't decided if he's going to follow-up on it. He fondly remembers many "free" items that he's received in the past and expects that the true cost to him could easily exceed the face value of the award.

(What is a "bumper scuff" Lynn wonders. An internet search reveals that this is cosmetic damage to the fascia of modern vinyl bumpers resulting from contact with other objects. Apparently this prize will be some amount of clean-up of such damage.)

Will Lynn go to this show next year if he's invited? — probably not. The show isn't focused along Lynn's interests and he doesn't feel any particular affiliation with the other show participants. At least one conversation that he was on the periphery of was way too socially conservative for his tastes, although he doesn't know if these attitudes necessarily represent the views of the majority present. Lynn applauds the church's efforts to hold an event that adds some fun and excitement to the larger community and recognizes their self interest in connecting with potential new members.

Lynn feels blessed that he lives in a locale where there are so many great opportunities to show his cars. He will continue to experiment with new shows until his social calendar is full with car shows that match his peculiar tastes. That doesn't appear to present a problem.
