PENNY ON THE SET: Assorted photos of the video taping of the "flat scene."

The Riverbank Community Theater is staging Jean Shepherd's comedy A Christmas Story this season. You have probably seen the movie about Ralphie Parker who wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas in the worst possible way, and all the adults in his life keep telling him that he'll "shoot his eye out!"

There's a scene in the story where the family has a flat tire in their 1937 Oldsmobile. The Old Man likes to pretend that he's on the pit crew at a car race and rushes out to change the tire as quickly as possible, asking Mrs. Parker to time him. When the Old Man knocks the lug nuts out of Ralphie's hand, Ralphie lets slip with a bad word and winds up getting his mouth washed out with soap.

The production company decides that they'll video tape the scene, displaying the video during the stage play. When they contact the Northern California Oldsmobile Club for a car to use in the production, Penny is suggested as a good candidate. Lynn readily agrees to participate in this unique opportunity. The video taping takes place on a rural homestead outside of Modesto, California, on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007.

Lynn has a great time showing off Penny and watching the efforts of the cast and crew. Lynn and Jeanne will watch the final production with two tickets he was given in appreciation for the use of Penny.

Lynn is looking forward to the show and seeing the final video that features Penny as the main prop. Here are some more pictures of the activity on the set.

The Parker Family pose with Penny (left photo, left-to-right: Randy, Mrs. Parker, Ralphie, The Old Man - Mr. Parker). Lynn is delighted to discover how animated and engaging the actors are, on and off camera.

You might be surprised how long it takes to create the raw material for the video. Spectators eventually take seats as the taping stretches to three hours.
